Life is This Simple

“Life is this simple: we are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and the divine is shining through it all the time. This is not just a nice story or a fable, it is true.”
Thomas Merton, Spiritual Master: The Essential Writings;  Orbis Books, 2001.

Beauty and love are all around, and where they're not it's obvious something's wrong. Sunsets over the ocean, sun rises over the mountain, pleasing melodies from U2, friends and family helping in a time of need, a newborn baby... Yeah, I can see God shining through all over the place 😊 thanks for sharing Keith."

Via Facebook, Keith Shields replied, "I think I went through the same process as I read these words of Merton. I still struggle with "this simple" for it implies that one readily sees the divine shining through. My experience is that it often takes work to see the divine. So, simplicity here is something else. It relates to the simplicity with which God works in the world, or the simplicity of how God reveals himself to us, or some other thing that eludes me. Simplicity does not refer to how easy it is to grasp the divine. Ultimately, I too agree with the statement."
